Comparing kitchen installation quotes can be confusing. One fitter quotes a single number, another lists twenty lines, and a third gives a day rate. The goal is simple: know exactly what you are paying for and avoid surprises halfway through the job.
What a good quote includes
- Scope of work: strip-out, unit fitting, appliances, worktops, plumbing, electrics, gas, plastering, tiling and decorating — each listed clearly.
- Who supplies what: units, worktops, sink, tap, splashback, tiles, sockets and materials.
- Waste removal and protection of floors and other rooms.
- Timeline with an agreed start date and expected duration.
- Payment stages linked to work completed.
- Guarantee on workmanship, in writing.
- Certificates you will receive for gas and electrical work.
Fixed price vs estimate
An estimate can change once work starts; a fixed price should not, unless you change the scope. At Surchan Kitchen we give fixed-price quotes after a free home survey, so the number we agree is the number you pay.
Red flags
- Large cash payments up front before any work is done.
- Gas work “done by a mate” — gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- No mention of electrical certificates.
- Vague lines such as “plumbing as required”.
- No written guarantee.
Questions to ask every fitter
- Is this a fixed price or an estimate?
- Which trades are your own team and which are subcontracted?
- Are you insured, and can I see the certificate?
- What happens if parts are missing from my delivery?
- How do you protect my home and deal with waste?

Frequently asked questions
What could change a fixed price?
Only a change in scope that you agree to, such as adding extra sockets, moving the sink to a new wall or adding tiling that was not in the original plan. Any change is priced and agreed in writing before it is done.
Is VAT included in your quotes?
Our quotes clearly state how VAT is treated, so there is no confusion when the invoice arrives. Always check this line on any quote you compare.
Do you subcontract the work?
Carpentry, plumbing and electrics are handled by our own team, and gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. Specialist items such as stone worktops are made by trusted suppliers.
How quickly will I receive my quote?
After the free home survey, you normally receive a written, itemised quote within a few working days.
