Fitting cabinets is only part of a kitchen installation. Most projects also involve plumbing, electrical work and often gas. These trades have rules for good reasons, so it is worth knowing who should do what.
Gas: Gas Safe registered engineers only
By law, any work on gas appliances or pipework in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That includes connecting a new gas hob or moving a gas supply. Always ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. At Surchan Kitchen, gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers in our team.
Electrics: to current UK wiring regulations
New circuits for ovens and hobs, additional sockets and appliance spurs must comply with the current wiring regulations. Kitchen electrical work is often notifiable under building regulations, and you should receive a certificate for the work carried out.
Plumbing
Plumbing covers the sink, tap and waste, dishwasher and washing machine connections, and moving supply or waste pipes if the layout changes. Good plumbing is invisible: no drips, correct falls on waste pipes and accessible isolation valves.
Why one team for every trade helps
When separate trades are booked independently, delays and finger-pointing are common. When one team manages carpentry, plumbing, electrics and gas, each stage follows the last in the right order — and one person is responsible for the result.
What you should receive at handover
- Gas safety paperwork for any gas work.
- An electrical certificate for new circuits or notifiable work.
- Appliance manuals and warranty information.

Frequently asked questions
Can a kitchen fitter connect my gas hob?
Only if they are Gas Safe registered. Our gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, who provide the relevant paperwork.
Do I need a new circuit for an induction hob?
Most induction hobs and ovens need a dedicated circuit of the correct rating. We check your consumer unit and existing circuits during the survey.
Can the sink be moved to an island?
Often yes, but it requires new supply and waste runs with the correct fall, sometimes under the floor. We assess this during the survey.
Will I receive certificates?
Yes. You receive the relevant documentation for gas work and for notifiable electrical work carried out during the installation.
